वसिष्ठ उवाच यैषा ते तपती नाम सावित्र्यवरजा सुता तां त्वां संवरणस्यार्थे वरयामि विभावसो
Vaśiṣṭha said: O Vibhāvasu! On Saṃvaraṇa's behalf, I have come to ask you for your daughter Tapatī, Savitṛ's younger sister.
वशिष्ठ ने कहा: हे विभावसु! संवरण की ओर से, मैं आपसे आपकी पुत्री तापती, जो कि सविता की छोटी बहन है, माँगने आया हूँ।
Adiparvan · v2
स हि राजा बृहत्कीर्तिर्धर्मार्थविदुदारधीः युक्तः संवरणो भर्ता दुहितुस्ते विहंगम
He is a mighty king with great deeds. He is great-souled and is well versed in dharma and artha. O traveller in the sky! Saṃvaraṇa is a fit husband for your daughter."
वह महान कार्यों वाला एक शक्तिशाली राजा है। वे महात्मा हैं और धर्म तथा अर्थ में पारंगत हैं। हे आकाश के पथिक! संवरण आपकी पुत्री के लिए उपयुक्त पति है।"
The gāndharva said: "Hearing these words, Savita decided on giving her. Divākara saluted the Brāhmaṇa and said,
गंधर्व ने कहा: "इन शब्दों को सुनकर, सविता ने उसे देने का फैसला किया। दिवाकर ने ब्राह्मण को नमस्कार किया और कहा,
"O sage! Saṃvaraṇa is the best among kings and you are the best among riṣi-s. Tapatī is the best of women.Why give her somewhere else?"
"हे ऋषि! संवरण राजाओं में सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं और आप ऋषियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। तपती स्त्रियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ है। उसे कहीं और क्यों दें?"
Thereupon, Tapana himself gave the unblemished and perfect Tapatī to the great-souled Vaśiṣṭha, for Saṃvaraṇa's sake.
इसके बाद, तपन ने स्वयं संवरण के लिए, महान आत्मा वाले वशिष्ठ को बेदाग और उत्तम तापती दे दी।
The maharṣi accepted the lady Tapatī and taking his leave, Vaśiṣṭha returned to where the bull among the Kuru-s and the one with famous deeds was seated.
महर्षि ने महिला तपती को स्वीकार कर लिया और उनसे विदा लेकर, वशिष्ठ वहाँ लौट आये जहाँ कुरु-वंश का बैल और प्रसिद्ध कर्मों वाला बैठा था।

स राजा मन्मथाविष्टस्तद्गतेनान्तरात्मना दृष्ट्वा च देवकन्यां तां तपतीं चारुहासिनीम् वसिष्ठेन सहायान्तीं संहृष्टोऽभ्यधिकं बभौ
The king was possessed by love and his heart was fixed on her. He became extremely glad when he saw that Vaśiṣṭha was leading the divine maiden Tapatī, the one with a beautiful smile, towards him.
राजा प्रेम के वशीभूत हो गये थे और उनका हृदय उस पर आरूढ़ हो गया था। जब उन्होंने देखा कि वशिष्ठ सुंदर मुस्कान वाली दिव्य कन्या ताप्ती को अपनी ओर ले जा रहे हैं, तो उन्हें बहुत खुशी हुई।
The illustrious riṣi Vaśiṣṭha, pure of spirit, came to the king when he had completed the twelfth night of his vows.
जब राजा ने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा की बारहवीं रात पूरी कर ली, तो पवित्र आत्मा वाले प्रसिद्ध ऋषि वशिष्ठ राजा के पास आए।
Thus Saṃvaraṇa obtained his wife through austerities and worship of the Lord Gopati and Vaśiṣṭha's energy.
इस प्रकार संवरण ने भगवान गोपती और वशिष्ठ की शक्ति की तपस्या और पूजा के माध्यम से अपनी पत्नी को प्राप्त किया।

ततस्तस्मिन्गिरिश्रेष्ठे देवगन्धर्वसेविते जग्राह विधिवत्पाणिं तपत्याः स नरर्षभः
That bull among men accepted Tapatī's hand on that best of mountains, frequented by gods and gāndharva-s, in accordance with the prescribed rituals.
मनुष्यों में उस बैल ने उस सर्वोत्तम पर्वत पर, जहां देवता और गंधर्व अक्सर आते रहते हैं, तपती का हाथ निर्धारित अनुष्ठानों के अनुसार स्वीकार किया।
With Vaśiṣṭha's permission, the rājarṣi desired to sport with his wife on that mountain.
वशिष्ठ की अनुमति से राजर्षि ने उस पर्वत पर अपनी पत्नी के साथ क्रीड़ा करने की इच्छा व्यक्त की।

ततः पुरे च राष्ट्रे च वाहनेषु बलेषु च आदिदेश महीपालस्तमेव सचिवं तदा
He then instructed his minister to rule over his city, kingdom, mounts and armies.
फिर उसने अपने मंत्री को अपने शहर, राज्य, पर्वतों और सेनाओं पर शासन करने का निर्देश दिया।

नृपतिं त्वभ्यनुज्ञाय वसिष्ठोऽथापचक्रमे सोऽपि राजा गिरौ तस्मिन्विजहारामरोपमः
Bidding farewell to the king, Vaśiṣṭha left. The king sported on that mountain like a god.
राजा को विदा करके वशिष्ठ चले गये। राजा उस पर्वत पर देवता के समान विहार करता था।

ततो द्वादश वर्षाणि काननेषु जलेषु च रेमे तस्मिन्गिरौ राजा तयैव सह भार्यया
The king pleasured with his wife in the groves and streams of that mountain for twelve years.
राजा ने बारह वर्षों तक उस पर्वत के उपवनों और झरनों में अपनी पत्नी के साथ रमण किया।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! For those twelve years, the one with a thousand eyes did not pour any rain in the king's city and kingdom.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन बारह वर्षों तक उस एक हजार आँखों वाले राजा के नगर और राज्य में वर्षा नहीं हुई।
Because of hunger and starvation, the men became like dead bodies. The city looked like a city of the king of the dead, populated by dead people.
भूख और भुखमरी के कारण मनुष्य मृत शरीर के समान हो गये। यह शहर मुर्दों के राजा के शहर जैसा लग रहा था, जिसमें मुर्दे लोग बसे हुए थे।
Then, seeing that condition, the illustrious riṣi Vaśiṣṭha, learned in dharma, went to the supreme among kings.
तब, उस स्थिति को देखकर, महान ऋषि वशिष्ठ, धर्म में विद्वान, राजाओं में सर्वश्रेष्ठ के पास गए।
O king! He brought back the tiger-like king, who had been away from his city for twelve years, together with Tapatī.
हे राजा! वह बाघ जैसे राजा को, जो बारह वर्षों से अपने नगर से दूर था, तपती सहित वापस ले आया।

ततः प्रवृष्टस्तत्रासीद्यथापूर्वं सुरारिहा तस्मिन्नृपतिशार्दूले प्रविष्टे नगरं पुनः
When that tiger among kings entered the city again, the slayer of demons poured down rain, as before.
जब राजाओं के बीच वह व्याघ्र पुनः नगर में प्रविष्ट हुआ, तो राक्षसों के संहारक ने पहले की भाँति वर्षा बरसा दी।
Thus, enervated by that foremost among kings, who had himself enervated his soul, the city and the kingdom became extremely happy.
इस प्रकार, राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ उस राजा द्वारा, जिसने स्वयं अपनी आत्मा को पवित्र कर लिया था, नगर और राज्य अत्यंत प्रसन्न हो गये।
With his wife Tapatī, the king performed sacrifices for twelve years, like Śākra, lord of the marut-s.
राजा ने अपनी पत्नी तपती के साथ मरुतों के स्वामी शक्र की भाँति बारह वर्षों तक यज्ञ किये।
O Pārtha! This is the story of the greatly fortunate Tapatī of ancient times. She was the daughter of Vivasvat and it is after her that you are named Tāpatya.
हे पार्थ! यह प्राचीन काल की अत्यंत भाग्यशाली तपती की कहानी है। वह विवस्वत की पुत्री थी और उसी के नाम पर आपका नाम तापत्य रखा गया।
O Arjuna! O greatest among those who scorch! On Tapatī, King Saṃvaraṇa had a son named Kuru. Born in that lineage of Tapatī, you are known as Tāpatya."
हे अर्जुन! हे झुलसानेवालों में श्रेष्ठ! तपती पर राजा संवरण का कुरु नामक पुत्र हुआ। तापती के वंश में जन्मे आप तापत्य के नाम से जाने जाते हैं।”
